Pet Tamer's Handbook

Hyena

With large round eyes, large ears, bushy tail, and a high pitched whine, pet tamers can’t seem to resist the hyena. But be wary! Although they look cuddlesome, as anyone who has run into these carnivores in the wild can tell you, they can be vicious.
Hyenas will eat just about any other animal, and have a particular taste for Bramble Fox. In the wild, hyenas often hunt in packs to take down their pray. They are also known to be scavengers and clean up after another predator. In the Noam Plains, aislings are the hyena’s top hunters.

Capturing a Hyena
Before heading out, you will need to fashion a muzzle out of leather strips that you can fasten over the hyena. A harness is also recommended, but not required. Cass in Noam Village should be able to help you out with this.
Hyenas are very territorial and are seldom alone. In order to capture one, you will need the assistance of multiple aislings. Hyenas will hide behind rocks and in small caves during the day to keep out of the heat. This is the best time to attempt to catch one. They can be easy tracked in Noam Plains as their foot prints will be evident in the dusty top-soil.
While staying out of sight, bait the hyena out of its hiding spot with some fresh cut meat. When the hyena comes out slowly surround the hyena, blocking off its retreat back into its hiding spot. The aislings in the front should continuously keep the hyena distracted while the ones behind work on slipping the muzzle over the hyena’s head. If you fashioned a harness, also slip that around it. The aisling will need to get a good grip on the muzzle, holding it at the base of the hyena’s neck. Grabbing the hyena’s legs together will allow you to flip it onto its side or carry him.
Other Facts
Hyena baiting was once common in Medenia before aisling discovery. The indigenous mundanes use to pit the hyenas against other animals that were often chained to a wall as a form of entertainment and gambling.
Hyenas need little water and eat vegetation.

Untameable: Desert Hyena
Adjacent to the Noam Plains, the Desert of Fire is also home to a breed of hyena. These hyenas are known as Desert Hyenas. Be aware that this breed is not considered tameable and is even outlawed in many Hwarone cities. There are subtle differences between the Noam Plains’ Hyena, and the Desert Hyena; the most obvious being the color difference.
Desert Hyenas tend to lack coloring, looking mostly brown. Hyenas found in the Noam Plains have grey tails, ears, and legs. Desert Hyena's can also be found in the Desert Dunes; this species is very dangerous, and should not be approached. They are even mortal enemies and will fight to the death if they meet.
Other Methods of Obtaining a Hyena
Capturing a wild hyena should be left to professional tamers. By law, once tamed, a hyena cannot be transferred to another aisling. For non-tamers, hyenas can be purchased from breeders ((350 Kruna in the Item Shop)).
Breeding is also a risky and even tricky business. It is difficult to tell a male and female apart, and even if two hyenas of the opposite sex can be persuaded to mate, the conception rate is low. Mother hyenas rarely survive long beyond giving birth, leaving the owner without his or her pet and a helpless orphan.

Taming a Hyena
Although they are hardly recognized for it, hyenas are proud animals. In order to tame one, you will need to give it respect and space. Keep the hyena in a crate or kennel – this space is exclusively his – never enter it. Instead use food to motivate the hyena to leave the shelter by moving the offering further and further away.
Always be consistent with feeding and if the hyena refuses to get the food after an extended period of time, move it closer. The goal is the build his trust and make him realize you are not a source of danger. After some time the hyena will not be bothered by your presence and you can begin to train it – again, with food. Most tamers would suggest starting with pups, as they will become more trusting sooner, and safer in the long run because their wild instincts will be less.
Once properly trained, hyenas can become intimidating companions, which are often tamed for a type of community status among tamers, or to attract the ladies.
Caring for Your Hyena
Unlike most mammal species, the female hyenas are the dominant sex. Not only do they grow bulkier than their male counterparts, but they active more aggressive. For this reason extra care should always be taken when providing any type of care to a female hyena, regardless of its familiarity to you. Never come into direct contact with a hyena without it being restrained and muzzled.
Captive hyenas should be kept in a large secured cage where it will have enough room to stretch out. Food can be provided alive or dead, fresh or old, at the discretion of the owner.
