Mileth College Guidelines & Rules

Teaching Guidelines

Nobles with a Village award or higher in History, Literature, Art, Lore, or Philosophy are able to hold classes in their respective subject(s). Teachers are permitted to hold up to two classes per 8 suns (( 24 hours )) unless otherwise permitted for special events. These guidelines prescribe the rules and best pedogical practices for teaching classes at the College.

Teachers found abusing their privileges in any form will quickly find their nobility stripped.

1) Class preperation

This is the first step. Ensure that you have enough substantive content to fill up the minimum time allotted to your class by the Mundane (( 20 minutes )). Holding a class in which students sit in silence to burn the clock will not be tolerated.

Lectures, games, activities, and debates are all welcome. The best practice is to outline a structured lesson in advance. Try to keep your classes about the subject in which are you are awarded, entrenched within the themes of Temuair and/or Medenia. From time to time, it is acceptable to hold classes regarding matters that are not strictly within your subject area but serve a helpful community purpose (for example, new developments in Mundane affairs or how the College functions).

Guest lectures are also acceptable from time to time, but they should not constitute the majority of your classes.

2) Scheduling

Consider writing up a syllabus about your class and committing to a fixed schedule. This is not mandatory, but you are highly encouraged to publicly promote your planned class(es), such as through boards and world shouts.

3) Announce that you will be hosting class

Before holding your class, check all other classrooms to see if another class is already in session. Multiple classes cannot be held at once.

When you are ready, speak to the classroom Mundane so that they can announce class. You will need to wait for students to arrive (( 10 min )).

4) Give your lesson

Now that you are ready, do whatever you planned to do. Adhere to the expectations as discussed under (1) Class preparation.

5) Give Speak Permission to those who are participating

Careful! You will need to know how to pronounce (( spell )) your student's name. The classroom Mundane cannot make suggestions for you. You are also giving the student the ability to speak for the entire class time, so be mindful about to whom you give speak permission.

6) You can remove disruptive students so long as this is not abused

You may remove students who are committed to disrupting your lesson and the learning environment. Please be mindful about not abusing these abilities. It is best to keep memories of the disruption in case a complaint is lodged against you.

For the most part, if you can manage to whom you give speak permission, this likely won't be an issue. To remove a troublesome student, you will need to talk to classroom Mundane about the Arts.

7) Grant Tardy Credit to anyone that was reasonably late to class

Many students often arrive after class has started and therefore miss credit. You can grant them tardy credit through the classroom Mundane (( This option is awkwardly placed very close to the option for finishing
class, so be careful about where you click! )).

Note that, if a student arrives within the last two or so minutes of class, you are not obligated to give them tardy credit.

8) Finish the lesson when you are done

It is helpful to let students know that class is over by saying "Class is cast". After this point, your class is complete and students can blink (( F5 )) or move around for credit. You will receive some experience for each student that blinks or moves very soon after the end of class, and with each student you have a chance to earn a rare noble garment mark. Additionally, teachers and students can speak to Uistean in the Mileth Library after class for more credit. Reminding students about this before ending your class is always appreciated!

9) College Portmanteaus

College Portmanteaus are treasure bags award to Aislings to recognize academic achievement or exceptional participation in an academic endeavor. Chancellors may decide to administer a Portmanteau in these circumstances.

In the classroom setting, students cannot earn or have a chance of earning a Portmanteau for meeting bare minimum expectations. You would not expect to run home with the spoils of the dreadful Son of Drakari for showing up at his doorstep, now would you? Classes that go above and beyond minimum expectations may be eligible for Portmanteaus.

Let us take art activities as an example. Opening class only to invite students to draw the theme of day would not qualify for Portmanteaus -- anyone can do that! Be creative! Perhaps you will teach about symbolism behind the town crests. You might open with a lecture on this topic and invite students to share their insights. In your next class, you might review what was discussed and then call on students to submit their own hypothetical town crest to represent a theme or area.

Or perhaps you will dedicate your class to honing an art technique, such as using shading to convey depth effectively; you should explain these techniques before inviting the class to apply them in an activity. Intellectual labour demands thinking, problem solving, practicing, applying, etc.

If you have any questions about these guidelines, please reach out to a Chancellor for advice.

Contest Rules

1) Plagiarism is not allowed. An Aisling will be disqualified and barred from entering future works if it contains plagiarized material. If any Aisling suspects plagiarized content, please contact a Knight or College Chancellor.
(( Individuals utilizing reference material from sources other than their own creative works MUST cite their sources. ))

2) Aislings with more than one jail OR arrest mark (or any combination thereof) are barred from entering a College entry. This decision was made by the Mundanes. ((You can enter on an alternate character if they qualify, but it can only be entered in their name.))

3) Nobles who receive any jail/arrest mark while having the mark of Nobility will be denounced (( marks will be removed )). We are mentors, keep that in mind.

4) Aislings suspected of bribing, coercing, or otherwise harassing other Nobles for reviews of their entries will be reported to a Ranger and/or the Mundanes for further review.

5) Your submitted entries may not violate Mundane Law. Works containing inappropriate or non-contextual profanity will be disqualified at the discretion of a College Chancellor, and forwarded to a Ranger and/or Mundanes for review.

7) Aislings are not allowed to review a sibling's entry, your own entry, nor may a sibling (or siblings) review an entry if you have already done so. Those suspected of this will be reported to the Mundanes, and your nobility may be revoked.

8) Altering your work after submitting it for review is not permissible. Works that are significantly altered during the course of the review and/or Mundane review will be disqualified at the College Chancellor's discretion.

9) Each Aisling may submit only one entry per Deoch. Any entry posted before a full Deoch has passed since their previous entry will be disqualified. Ask a College Chancellor for information on when you can enter again.

10) All Aislings, including Nobles and Rangers, must spend the three "Educated" marks in order to submit an entry. Works not accompanied by the Global Shout will be disqualified.

11) ((Use of Nexon's intellectual property pertaining to unreleased content - including, but not limited to, images, quests, armors, icons, skills, spells, animations, or any other content either from LOD, or unreleased but unimplemented within this client, is a violation of the ToS, and is strictly prohibited.))

12) All entries MUST relate to/evoke the theme of Temuair. ((Entries should be free of OOC content (Heresy), and MUST be DA-related.))

13) All entries must be either posted on the Contest Board or Posted on a Foreign Board ((AKA a website, etc. This method is preferred. NO downloads!))

Individuals found to be breaking the rules, in addition to being disqualified, may have any existing nobility taken away from them, or may be barred (permanently or temporarily) from making future entries.

Review Guidelines

I. Award Levels

This section provides the criteria for each award level:

o - Aisling: Highest level of achievement. Should only be awarded to an entrant that was outstanding in its category. Fills all criteria and goes above and beyond.

o - Kingdom: Second highest level of achievement. Should be awarded to an entrant that may not have been amazing, but was certainly excellent work. It may have a minor error or two, but this does notovershadow its excellence in other areas.

o - Village: Third highest level of achievement. This should be awarded to an entrant that did well enough to teach, but nothing more. They may have a few errors, or their idea may not have been original enough. However, they still did well overall.

o - Clave: Fourth highest level of achievement. This should be awarded to an entry that did well enough to be recognized, but not good enough to reward its author with the ability to teach a class. This entry probably needed a bit more work in more than one area. Future entries from this individual may yield greater results.

o - No Award: This recommendation should be made for entries that did not do well enough to be recognized. The work probably should not have been submitted in its state and the foundations suffer from significant flaws.

III. Review Standards

This section sets out the minimum standards for a review. Failure to adhere to these standards can, and most likely will, result in a Chancellor discarding your review. Refer to section V for more information regarding penalties for violating these standards.

Your review should focus on aspects relevant to the field of entry in which the entrant has submitted their work.

o For example, what do you think of the literary/poetic merit of a literature piece? The visual elements, theme, and overall impression of an art piece? The depth and utility of a lore piece? These are merely examples.

o Some criteria common to all categories include cultural relevance ((connection to the world of Dark Ages)), effort, and communication (written submissions).

Your analysis of the entry should be in-depth.

o Thoroughly inspect the entry. What are its strengths and weaknesses? Are there any ways in which the work can be improved? Provide reasons to justify your review.

o How in-depth an analysis will be will vary from noble to noble, but it must amount to more than, "Hey, I like this; give it Aisling!" Or, "This sucks; no award." Avoid merely summarizing the work.

Clearly state the award level that you think the entry deserves.

o The only acceptable choices are Aisling, Kingdom, Village, Clave, or No Award. There is no 'Abstain' recommendation. Refer to section I. Award Levels for the criteria of each award level.

o You should also review previous entries in the Loures Library to gain a sense of the quality expected to earn a high award.

Judge based on the entry and not the entrant.

o This is not a popularity contest. Whether you and the entrant are friends, foes, guldies, or in any non-arm's length relationship, you must set aside your biases.

o If 90% of the nobles posting reviews are saying that the entry is terrible, has no relevancy to Temuair, and should not have been submitted in its state, you will look suspicious if you come out of the woodwork to recommend Aisling.

Comport yourself with nobility.
o Entrants should never harass nobles over their reviews, and nobles should never harass entrants over their entries. What constitutes harassment in these cases is at the discretion of the contest host.

o Keep heresy in your reviews to a minimum (if not refrain from it altogether).

IV. Blind Reviews

Nobles can also mail their reviews to a Chancellor to have it posted anonymously. The Chancellor must first collect a memory of the noble's consent and mailed review for at least one Deoch. The Chancellor will only identify the anonymous reivewer on the internal Contest Votes board.

V. Penalties for Violating Review Standards
Chancellors may discard reviews that do not adhere to review standards set out in section III. Additionally, if a noble shows a very blatant or persistent disregard of the review standards, a Chancellor may place the noble on probation to uphold the integrity of the contest system. This also applies to blind reviews.

While on probation, a noble's reviews become advisory and cannot officially count towards the final recommendation. Chancellors may use their discretion to remove a noble's probationary status in the future.
When placing a noble on probation, the Chancellor must report the action in the [ CLOSED ENTRY ] post, keep memories of the offending review(s) for at least one Deoch and record the action on the internal Contest Votes board. Any discarded reviews will also be reported in the [ CLOSED ENTRY ] post.

Any questions or comments about these guidelines, or anything else, may be directed to a College Chancellor. Any individual wishing to report violation of these, or any other rule, should also contact a College Chancellor.
