…to the hundreds of Aislings who unknowingly made this possible. Without the diverse and impressive Legends of those who call Temuair home, this manual would not have been possible. Thank you for bringing the spark of inspiration and history together. And, to all the Aislings yet to come that find this tome useful as they write the history of the future.
As an Aisling, there is an inherent expectation that we will live exceptional lives. Through the light of the Goddess, Deoch gifted us with the spark of inspiration and, with that, forged an unspoken bond with our kind that we would carry society out of this perpetual darkness. That we would shoulder the burden of enlightenment after countless years of desperation; the torturous flirtation with the swirling abyss of darkness, the Aisling represented a hope that even the Gods couldn’t bring to the land from their seats in Kadath. As such, the Mundane have had a vested interest in our lives and accomplishments, so, as we came into abundance and spread to the far corners of Temuair, the Mundane waited with a deep thirst for news of the exploits we shared.
Stories were passed around crowded tavern tables like currency. The Aisling exploits carried a value that could fill a beggar's stomach in their telling. While the Mundane were designated to wait on the sidelines for better days, yearning for those fabled ages of Hy-Brasyl to shine once more, and every slain Dubhaimid felt a step in the return to that glory. Still, to watch the stoic warrior return from the savage wood left little comfort to those wielding only hoe and pitchfork - and the stories being passed from tavern to tavern grew stale during the low times. Even among the Aisling, who never shy from extolling their own virtue, found themselves repeating tales so often that even they began to doubt their authenticity
We take for granted that our exploits follow us; that our deeds are so easily shared and accessed. Every day we weave our Legend, and those achievements are cataloged neatly for all to admire. Despite this, most Aislings seem to eschew the opportunity to build their story in favor of a rush to the maddening realm of Kadath where they exchange their sanity for vitality. With the discovery of certain methods, gaining vast insight is as easy as unlocking a chest, but what you sacrifice in dashing towards untold power is a loss of connection with the land, and very little to tell of your exploits other than how many beasts you can slay in a moon.
My intent with this tome is to inspire the young Aisling to build their legend and give them the practical knowledge to accomplish key tasks as they mature through the circles of experience. Because there are countless marks one may receive on their Legend, I’ve categorized this work into a number of chapters, aiming to provide specific guidance depending on what you wish to accomplish with your life’s story. Whether beginning your adventure or seeking to add some deeds to your Legend, I hope you will find this book of value.
Because of its length, I recommend consulting with the Table of Contents frequently to help navigate to sections of interest ((View > Show Outline)).
While the Legend is something we associate with Aislingkind, as we all carry one from the moment of our spark, the tradition actually dates back to the days of Middle-Danaan and traces its form and function to a number of different traditions. Within this history we can find the blueprints for what we know today as the modern Legend.
The drowning of Hy-Brasyl sent a diaspora of shattered souls across Temuair in search of a new home. Many great cities were founded during this time, and from these seeds grew mighty kingdoms. As these regions waged wars to establish dominance, borders were codified and the world seemed, more or less, settled. As soon as the shape of the world was known, there was a mad dash to fill in the maps with details and color. Driven by Rucesion, this Age of Exploration was set into motion and, though these great navigators were driven by different motivations, everything they brought back was considered of value, especially knowledge.
Every harbor in the kingdom was outfitted with a Salão dos Registos; a hall of records where these pioneers would have their deeds and discoveries documented. While this was largely set in place to ensure that Rucesion could claim major discoveries and charter trade routes with other cultures, these had the unexpected side effect of being captivating reads. When sailors would put into port making bold claims about the surreal voyage they’d had, it became commonplace to direct disbelievers to the Hall Ledgers to verify for themselves.
The similarities to today’s Aisling Legend is immediately apparent, but luckily we don’t need to travel to a central location to consult a log of our heroics. That we, at all times, carry our records with us is an innovation that grew out of an unexpected source…
Though borders are wont to change, and kingdoms mature and decay with each generation of rule - one thing has been steady as stone through all of Temuair’s history: the holy shrines of the Octave. Though they might have seen renovations during the Aisling age, their places were decided by the ancient Aosdans who first discovered the Great Gods of the Earth-Sea - some of whom even proved worthy to join those ranks, themselves. These temples, which are geometrically aligned on sites of immense energetic power, form a circuit upon which the most devout or troubled souls sought redemption.
The Pilgrimage of the Octave is an ancient tradition in which a supplicant sought divine favor by walking rugged trails between each of the eight temples of Temuair. Even today, the dangers faced on this massive hike can be fatal; the treacherous terrain and the long stretches that cut through hostile territory without civilization to provide shelter are second only to the beasts that stalk this feral wilderness. In time, the Pilgrimage of the Octave even became a path to redemption for those who were condemned for crime or heresy.
As the Pilgrimage was adopted into the mainstream of society, Mundanes sought a way to verify their journey - much like the navigators in the Age of Exploration. Rather than leaving a mark in the towns or taverns they passed through, these wanderers began to carry a booklet in which trusted officials would mark their progress chronologically and mark it with their seal. When the weary pilgrim arrived back where they started, all they would need to do was show their Octave Credentials to prove they had, indeed, walked the long and punishing route.
Unlike the Pilgrimage of the Octave, there is no prescribed route through your chosen path. Accomplishments are often as unique as the individual that achieves them. It wouldn’t seem fit to ask the Aisling to check in with an official for each minor victory, nor would it make sense to expect every spark to travel a linear road through life. Methods that were acceptable for the Mundane did not apply perfectly to the shining Aisling.
As a compromise, rather than dictate where and when an Aisling should be recognized, the Mundane created a list of feats worthy of recognition – an agreeable legacy of tasks that bring light or darkness to the land. In this way, every soul can forge their own unique path while also having reasonable benchmarks with which to measure their journey against their peers. Additionally, this also serves to track those who would bring harm to society and ensures that their misdeeds don’t escape the notice of others. Since each mark is standardized, the Mundanes are able to amend the Legend of any Aisling without needing to go through official channels. The credentials are updated nearly as fast as one completes their deed.
In addition, the Aisling Legend also contains biographical data on the first page that includes vital information like your name, path, which guild you belong to and your standing in that guild, and your title (if you have one). It also denotes your current kingdom of residence with that town’s official seal. An identifying portrait may also be affixed, but the Mundanes also provide a current sketch of your appearance as well as a manifest of your equipment. This makes introductions easy and compelling, and allows us to pass from kingdom to kingdom without issue.
The Aisling Legend, like the accomplishments they track, are constructed of the same standard. This is symbolic, in that each Aisling is born with the same potential, but at the end of their journey is completely unique. Additionally, this acts as a security measure, preventing falsified legends from entering circulation. Upon sparking, an Aisling will find their Legend is already in their possession, and will remain bound to them through the entirety of their life. Thus is the Mundane magic they are imbued with.
From the outside, the Legend is a humble and unassuming thing: the book measures around the size of an adult hand. The cover is a toned leather, which is rugged and flexible, allowing it to be stowed in any bag without worrying about damaging the structure or contents. It is bound at the top and bottom along the left margin with two golden rings, signifying the value of the life it represents. These are produced at great expense to the Mundanes of Temuair as an investment in the future that Deoch’s Spark represents.
The pages of the Legend are made of fine vellum, which was chosen over parchment for its quality and durability. During the production of this precious material, a special agent is added during the tanning process, which makes the pages nearly invincible, and gives them their characteristic dark brown color. These thin pages are resistant to wear; even Sgrios would decay before the sheets used to fill the Legend. Great care was taken to ensure that each story, woven of the tales of a life long-lived and highly accomplished, will exist long after the Aislingkind have met their natural end. One should also not fear that they will fill these pages, for, when there is no room left to record a deed, the Mundanes happily add more to accommodate future heroics.
An entry in your Legend is colloquially known as a “mark” or “legend mark”, but the official term is ‘Selo’, which owes its roots back to the traditional Rucesion Ledgers in which the officials would affix their stamp to recorded accomplishments as a way to verify the claim. When it came time to design the Aisling Legend, because there was a need for uniformity across countless documents, the Mundanes opted, instead of using the Selo of the Mundane marking the accomplishment, to use a defined set of Selos for the tasks they represent.
Altogether there are eight selos used in the Aisling Legend; three denote tasks universal to all Aislingkind, and one specific to each of the five paths; though these often apply to different aspects of life in Temuair related to those paths. Familiarizing yourself with the different Selos will help you quickly scan another’s Legend for notable deeds. Below are the eight different Selos and their meanings.
Societal Selo: This is the general stamp affixed to Legends to denote a deed that impacted Temuairian society in some way. This is the most commonly used Selo, and is frequently affixed to both positive and negative events. A majority of an Aisling’s Legend will be represented by the Societal Selo.
Compassionate Selo: Used to mark an event that showed a great act of compassion or love; also used in matters of the heart - good and bad. These are much less frequently used, though they are prized as they display a generous and caring Spark.
Victorious Selo: The rarest of the three common selos, this highlights a major accomplishment, victory or event. Most frequently denoted with Cerulean or even Golden ink to highlight their importance. One who wishes to accumulate a Legend of value should seek these opportunities out whenever possible.
Divinity Selo: The mark of the priesthood, this Selo is most frequently found decorating the Legends of those who walk the path of the priest, or are heavily involved in the temple of their worship. One who’s Legend is heavy with Divinity Selos is an Aisling close to their God.
Arcana Selo: Used primarily by those who walk the path of the Wizard and those who dabble in the arcane arts. Performing tasks in the world of magical studies will grant the Aisling a selo with the symbol of a Wizard’s staff.
Warlord Selo: The mark of the sword is scarcely used to denote serious battles, but is most frequently associated with those who walk the path of the Warrior. Those who have taken part in many honorable and triumphant battles will bear this Selo with pride.
Martial Selo: Found often carried by those who participate in martial arts and other structured disciplines; most frequently associated with the Legends of Monks. This Selo was devised by the brothers of the Sapphire Stream to immortalize deeds performed by those who have undergone strict training.
Skilled Selo: While this mark is used to mark mastery of a number of trades employed by various paths, it is also the selo used clandestinely by the path of the Rogue. As this path finds it advantageous to hide in the shadows, so, too, do they hide their achievements among the skilled trades of the craftsman. |
Another aspect of the visual language is the color of the ink used to pen the accomplishment in the Legend. Because the most active Aisling is likely to build a thick legend, and those looking to hide a misdeed will often wash their legends with meaningless marks, the Mundanes chose a specific motif with their ink choices for each mark. In doing so, they easily allow others to scan the record for great accomplishments and highlights crimes for those wishing to avoid the wrong company.
Inks were developed specifically to adhere to the vellum pages of the Aisling Legend, and the hues were selected specifically to offer visibility and contrast with the dark brown surface. While not strictly meant to be seen as a hierarchy, as many of these marks can be temporary or are applied due to accidental circumstances, Aislings tend to favor marks in the order listed below; either due to the rarity, or because of what these marks represent.
Please consult the table below for examples and explanations of the six colors employed by the Mundanes when marking a Selo in the Legend.
Golden Ink | Marks penned in golden ink are of the highest order of achievement, and as such, demand the most opulent hue available. This ink is produced only by the archivists in the Library of Loures and is used very sparingly.
Cerulean Ink | This striking blue ink is made from crushed cobalt and is used to pen deeds of great impact. These marks are highly coveted and desirable. Many of these tasks can be achieved only in the early insights.
Silver Ink | The character of this iridescent ink appears silvery on the page, but achieves its shine from iron filings sourced from village smiths. This ink is rather uncommon and typically only used for limited events held by the Mundanes of Loures.
Common Ink | The standard ink used to mark Legends is actually a bleach that whitens the dark vellum pages. This is the baseline for all marks and are generally well regarded.
Crimson Ink | Red Marks are seen as negative or ugly, though sometimes they are also used to denote aspirations such as those looking to involve themselves in political office. You may also find them used in pursuits outside of public opinion, like Necromancy.
Orange Ink | Reserved for use by Rangers and other Mundane peacekeepers. A single orange mark often overshadows an entire career of positive engagement. These marks, like the tabards of the Rangers who pen them, are highly visible. |
While there is never a bad time to focus on establishing an enviable Legend, it must be noted that the best Legends are made a priority from the first day of your Aisling life. Why? Because those Mundanes that penned the Legend standards were less concerned with raw power and more interested in how the Aisling would shape society and bring us closer to the Goddess’ light. That being said, there are tasks more befitting for young, inexperienced Aislings than those who have become a master of their path. As such, to truly impress with the length and diversity of your credentials, you must do so from a young age.
If you’re reading this as a seasoned Aisling well into your Medenian path looking for something to do besides entreat with the Gods for greater vitality, fret not – there are still many valuable selos to add to your legend regardless of your path or insight. I’ve laid out a number of interesting marks to add to your collection regardless of your station, and, with this book at your side, you’ll be keen on the myriad opportunities to further your fame
Some marks come naturally as you progress along the path of mastery, others are more elusive. For those who’ve just sparked, read carefully so as not to miss an opportunity to make a statement with your Legend. As the first circle, composed of the first ten insights, tends to be short-lived, these legend marks are among the easiest to miss and most commonly absent from Legends of the titans of the modern age. It is also a time replete with many identifying marks that can be achieved simply by chatting with some of the friendly Mundanes of Mileth.
Aisling - Deoch ((#)) | |
By virtue of your awakening from the drudgery of Mundane life, every Aisling’s first mark is a declaration of this fundamental difference. It is awarded, without direction otherwise, at the very moment of your spark. |
((Town)) Mundane Birth - ((Season & Deoch))
Many Aislings still retain a faint memory of their previous Mundane life, and others go to lengths to investigate who they were before. Either way, by speaking with Rionna, the proprietress of the Mileth Inn, you can have her mark your birthplace and date on your legend. This is an easy mark to grab right after your awakening. Be forewarned; Riona is not as young as she once was, and in her current state of health has had difficulties calculating the appropriate birth date. You may tell her you are 18 Deochs of age, yet she will mark you as being born at the dawn of the Aisling Age. If it is more important for you to have the precise date of birth represented on your legend, avoid seeking this mark. If you later change your mind, it can be removed at the cost of considerable experience. |
Loved by Mileth Mundanes (#)
Your first cerulean selo, but also the first struggle that tries the patience of the young Aisling. To receive the recognition of the Mundane folk of Mileth, you must put yourself to work for the weaponsmith Callough. Though his task is menial, the chance to receive his adoration is slim. Keep returning to aid him every day ((Every 8 hours)) for another opportunity to earn this coveted mark. Be forewarned, this task ceases to be available after your 10th insight. I suggest starting this chore as soon as possible to allow yourself ample time to earn the mark before you advance. |
((Class)) by Oath of ((Guide))
Perhaps you sparked with a clear vision of what you’d like to do with your newfound Aisling life, or you may be weighing the alternatives. Many will rush to pick a class, but this is something I usually suggest waiting to do until you’ve proven your worth to the Mileth Mundanes. This gives plenty of time to consider the path you wish to walk. A note about choosing a path: in the distant past, it was mandatory to get another Aisling of that same path to teach you the craft. Now, the avatar of the Gods that rule the five paths of Temuair will take your oath directly. To add extra character to your Legend, I’d suggest asking a respected Aisling with a name of quality to be your Aisling guide. While it was a burden in the past, these days it is often a sign of respect and something people are happy to do. |
Mentored by ((Name)) | |
Many Aislings choose to ask their guide to mentor them, though your mentor can be any person of your choosing, even an Aisling of a different path. If you have an interest in politics, religion, arena or higher education, it might be prudent to find a mentor who can teach you of the intricacies of these social structures. Don’t forget that being accepted as a student and ‘completing’ a mentorship are different things. You may complete the mentorship after one double-moon, though this may be repeated so long as you are under the mentorship of this Aisling ((once a week)). Again, you may want to consider finding a mentor with a name that is appropriate to the Legend you’re building. |
Slew the Terror of the ((Alley / Garden / Crypt))
Your second opportunity for a Cerulean Selo, and your first great victory. Starting from your fourth insight, the beggar in the Mileth Tavern will entrust you with a quest to free him from nightmarish visions. This quest is interesting in that there are three possible locations in which the beggar will send you and doing one will prevent you from completing the others. The Terror of the Alley and the Terror of the Garden are only achievable between the insights of four and nine, whereas you can continue to pursue the Terror of the Crypt until your forty-ninth insight. Because of its rarity, the Terror of the Alley and Garden carry a little more clout, but getting any of these is an achievement that will brighten your credentials. |
Completed Caid Quest | |
The first of three quests given by Nigel, the troubled orphan from Tagor. To get this cerulean mark, you’ll have to jump through a series of three hoops, performing requested tasks for the child. Some of these involve slaying challenging beasts, so it is suggested you bring a friend along. This quest can only be performed until your 25th insight, so try to catch his attention early in case you need more than one attempt at it. Nigel will often reach out to you while walking through Mileth, but if you really wish to get his attention, you can find him in an empty house near the back of Tagor. |
Loved by Suomi Mundanes
If you thought it was agonizing to seek the approval of the Mileth Mundanes, wait until you find yourself on the long hike to Suomi to help Eeva, the Innkeeper, style her hair. The silver lining, here, is that this quest can be performed at any insight, so you can continue along your path as you wait for the appreciation you desire. If you fail the first time, don’t fret, though you will find yourself waiting quite a while before she tires of her new haircut ((repeatable once every week)). |
Reaching eleven insights is a landmark in the life of many Aislings; you get to upgrade your equipment, wear a new outfit appropriate to your path, and you can start to take on greater responsibilities in society. This is a great time to involve yourself in a religion or in politics, if you have a mind for it. There are also a few more easily missed legend marks between here and the forty-first insight. Below are the suggested marks to seek during this influential circle of your Aisling life.
((Class)), guided by ((Guide))
Many Aislings these days don’t realize that taking an oath to a path is only a sort of apprenticeship. When you reach your eleventh insight, you may officially become a member of your chosen path. Mark this achievement by meeting your guide in the room of your path and cementing your partnership at this point. Of note, if you didn’t pick your path until after your 11th insight, you may do these consecutively. Just ask your guide to wait for you while you walk back to the room. Additionally, if you didn’t have an Aisling guide, or your guide was unhelpful or inappropriate, you may abandon them in favor of someone more deserving. |
-Initiated ((Class)) ((Name)) Guided ((Class)) ((Name))
Now that you’ve reached your second circle, you’re mature enough to start sharing your wisdom with others. If you feel inclined to shape the next generation, make yourself available to start guiding other Aislings in the path of your choice. A note, the initiation mark is only visible to you. While it doesn’t add to your Legend directly, your name is now forever a part of your student’s Legend, and in this way you help weave the mesh of our society. Additionally, the initiation is mandatory to guide your student once they reach their eleventh insight, themselves. |
Cured a sick child in LouresAided the Pact of Anaman
What used to be a standard humanitarian effort in ages past, the daughter of a Louresian Noble suffers under her illness without the aid of the Aislings. Bringing relief to the child requires tenacity and a little botanical knowledge, but if you can fetch a number of Sevti Blossoms she may yet be saved. Alternatively, you can bring death to the land by aiding the Pact of Anaman. Even among the edgier and alternative population, this is not advised as the Pact mark is red and only visible to yourself. If you still have your heart set on contributing to this illness you may bring the child Tulsi blossoms instead. For those who are looking to progress naturally, it should be noted that you receive more experience from flowers you pick yourself, rather than those donated by other Aislings. |
Recovered the Emerald Knight InsigniaAided the Emerald Knights Aided the Necromancer Order
One of the dwarves from deep beneath Abel told a traveling bard of an ancient order of heroic knights. If you can uncover the symbol of their order and deliver it to a representative of one of the involved parties you can net two selos without putting yourself into danger. |
Kept Fisk’s SecretReputable - 1 | Told Fisk’s Secret Disreputable - 1
Make some time to run a few errands around Suomi for the special skill master Fisk. He needs help assembling a bouquet, and, aside from a modest donation to the temple of Deoch and the fee for the arrangement, it won’t cost anything but your time. |
Small Heart of Fire with ((Name))Small Heart of Moon with ((Name)) Small Heart of Stone
The love of a man, slowly being driven into madness by a pulsing darkness that lies dormant beneath the castle, requires an Aisling’s intervention. Marlin, the former councilor of Loures, wishes to send messages to his lover, Bella. Doing so will require investigative skills and dedication. Either grab a partner of any gender and brave the Dark Maze in the conjunction of Moon and Fire, or bring the maddening Conix Stone and perform the ritual as the Heart of Stone. For those who wish to earn Marlin’s lasting protection, you’ll need a partner, but if you’re only interested in the Selo, pick whichever suits your preference. |
Completed Tiota Quest | |
Remember the troubled youth who sent you on a series of tasks in exchange for a strange necklace? Nigel is back with more requests, this time in exchange for a necklace that occasionally made the wearer more intelligent or nimble. With the advent of the Lumen Amulet, these minor attribute boosts have largely been supplanted, but the coveted cerulean mark is as cherished as it is rare. Be mindful that after your 50th insight, Nigel will no longer offer this achievement, so be sure not to miss it. |
Saved the daughter of Porte ForestEased the suffering of Porte Forest
An adventure that should be made a priority at this point in your path is the Porte Forest saga. Renowned for its dangerous trap room that used to frequently be the source of distress calls from worried siblings, begging for help to rescue their party from doom; these days Porte Forest has grown relatively silent, even though they allowed for Aislings of any insight to walk the woods. That said, Mundanes will only entrust the care of the Forest to those under their 40th insight! Failing to attend to this quest before then will rob you of the opportunity for two coveted marks; one in Cerulean ink. The Selos attached are also prestigious. Be sure to make this a priority while you can! |
After you’ve achieved forty-one insights, you’ve officially entered your third circle. At this point, you’re nearly halfway along your path and have begun to attain some mastery of their craft. Those who have been fastidious in their duties will also have an enviable legend that can put even those who walk Medenian paths to shame. Luckily, the third circle contains the last of the Selos that are reserved for Aislings of specific insights, and, comparatively, holds very few tasks to accomplish. Remaining vigilant in this range will reward you with a number of coveted and rare marks.
Defeated the Octopus of Karlopos
Though this mark is penned in common ink, it is absent from many legends because this quest can only be pursued by Aislings within this insight range. Once you’re able, gather a group containing one Aisling of each path and head to Karlopos to seek the King Octopus. |
Worthy of the Cap of DanaanWorthy of the Band of Danaan
A fabled cap, created by the Gods and given to the Aisling as a token of their faith in us. This quest embodies the distilled spirit of Aislingkind, as it sees you traversing the land aiding troubled Mundanes and entreating with the deities of the octave. This can be done at any time after your 50th insight, but the cap is such a boon to the young, so there is no point in delaying this quest. Female Aislings receive the Band of Danaan instead of a Cap. |
Completed Treas Quest | |
Your friend Nigel is back again with his final requests. Though his tasks may be dangerous, though they may be demeaning or chaotic, if you can persevere in this challenge, you’ll not only receive another rare cerulean mark, but you’ll also have finished your final insight-gated task. Take a deep breath and enjoy an ale at the tavern; everything from this point on - aside from class specific marks when seeking a second path - can be achieved at any time. |
Explorer of Oren Sewers
While actually exploring the Oren Sewers can be dangerous for Aislings of this circle, attaining this mark is more akin to “unlocker of Oren Sewers”. All you have to do to attain this mark is obtain an Oren Key from the depth of the Lynith Sea and descend the stairs in Baldo’s home. For those who brave the sea in search of this key; don’t go alone - the creatures that lurk below the waves can be rather dangerous. |
Entered Muisir Village
Similarly to the previous Selo, we can mark an achievement associated with a dangerous and hostile place without putting ourselves in harm’s way. Across the impossibly long bridge to an island in the center of Lake Undine lies a peculiar cave. If you can figure out how to enter this tiny realm, you’ll be rewarded with a mark that proves you’ve solved the puzzle. |
Hunted down a wolf of West Woodland
The sole inhabitant of a small settlement in the West Woodlands needs help dispatching the wolf that ravaged his village and scared the rest of his neighbors away. This quest is easily missed because the West Woodlands are so often left unexplored, but Throttler is happy to mark your legend for dealing with this savage beast. |
This range perfectly illustrates the prerogative of the Mundanes that standardized the Selos of the Aisling Legend. Your first circle, when you are incapable of facing great danger, the Mundane put a large focus on the value of helping others and contributing to society. As your power grows, these menial tasks are more and more beneath you. As you begin to grasp the higher insights, the focus shifts to path mastery. The needs of the Mundane seem unimportant. As such, within the last three circles there are remarkably few marks to affix to your legend. Enjoy a break in your questing and spend some time honing your skills and spells. At the end of the 6th circle you get the Selo that every young Aisling yearns for. While you sharpen your skills and hone your abilities, this is a great time to catch up on any Selos you may have missed along your way.
| Nightmare Quests |
After the 80th insight has been attained at the beginning of your 5th circle, regardless of the path, an Aisling may face a nightmare relating to a legendary figure that best represents their profession and sex. These dreams are interesting, as you may dream of a different figure depending on what season of the Deoch you are in. Regardless, each of the five paths must dream deeply and accomplish their task to receive their mark and a new outfit akin to the figure in their dream. For a rundown of all possible marks, please see the appendix. |
Has Defeated ((#)) of Oren’s Pirates
If you’re feeling particularly brave and have the assistance of some able-bodied friends, you may seek to aid the people of Oren to rid themselves of the pirate occupation that has sent their King into hiding. To do so, you’ll need to seek out the village elder Baldo and offer your help. He will track your progress every time you eliminate three of them. For those willing to fight for Oren’s freedom, he even has a few exciting trophies to offer in addition to the Selo. |
Aisling of TalgoniteAisling of Mythril Aisling of Hy-Brasyl
At the beginning of your 6th circle, once you have reached your 97th insight, you may choose to become an Aisling of a precious metal. This selo, meant to be a representation of a sum of your accomplishments, also unlocks a number of other tasks related to your life as a master of your path. Most commonly you find that, even with a hefty and full Legend, that Aislings are measured as Talgonite. This is no shortcoming in your career; becoming an Aisling of Talgonite still requires considerable skill, resources and vast accumulated knowledge. However, if you wish to attain the other marks, you will have to prove yourself a beacon of enlightenment and hope among the Aisling. Becoming an Aisling of Mythril requires you to have provided mentorship 200 times (bear in mind; this doesn’t have to mean 200 students – a mentorship can be repeated once a double-moon ((weekly)). You could hypothetically reach this achievement with a single student and a lot of time ). To become an Aisling of Hy-Brasyl you must have the recognition of Mileth College as an award winner of the highest standing. Don’t get too hung up on this, though – you can (and should!) aim to accomplish all three, but you can receive the other marks at any time after your 97th insight. |
Attempting ((Class)) Dedication
After your accumulated experience has yielded 99 insights, you have a serious decision to make about your future. Whether you decide to dedicate yourself to a sole path or whether to begin again at the beginning of the journey as another class is a serious choice. Hopefully by this point you have a firm grasp on what you wish to do. Should you decide to take a second path, you will receive this crimson Selo during the eight Temuairian days between petitioning the Avatars for a second chance and taking the plunge. Once you complete the process, this mark will be replaced with another. |
| ((Path)) Dedication |
Not all who climb to this pinnacle of accomplishment are prepared to settle for a single path. Some wish to return to their innocence, foregoing their accumulated experience, to relearn their mastery as another path. This offers an unrivaled versatility, whereas ‘Pure Masters’ are better able to focus on a single path - therefore having access to more advanced magics and techniques. What you wish to do with your Aisling Spark is entirely up to you, but if you’re looking to walk a second path, you may want to consult the next chapter to make sure you’ve accomplished all the tasks your current path has to offer. This Selo would seem to suggest it would denote the new path you’ll be studying, but here the path denotes which profession you’re leaving and will bear the associated Selo. |
Master | |
The moment you’ve worked so hard for comes with a coveted Victorious Selo penned in glorious cerulean ink. This moment, this tremendous accomplishment, is worthy of celebration and, because you worked so hard to craft a perfect legend, achieving masterhood will feel like an honor that was earned. In addition to this proud mark, you’ll find that the Mundanes also see fit to update the class listed on your passport to reflect your new station. All who check your Legend will be sure to notice the culmination of your hard work. |
While this long road has led to a lifetime of accomplishment, achieving masterhood doesn’t come with a Selo of its own, but rather a title. Reaching this summit is often robbed of its glory when the journey comes in the form of the instant enlightenment that sits at the bottom of a treasure chest, but having worked tirelessly to improve society and test yourself against the beasts of Temuair, becoming a Master carries the glory appropriate to the honorific. Still, this is no time to rest on your laurels; this achievement opens a whole world of opportunity. Consider facing these feats to become a Grand Master; preparing yourself to walk a Medenian path, if you so choose.
Great Soldier of the Goblin War
The Goblins of the Grasslands outside of the Temuair Capitol are forever mounting offensives against the city. As a master, you have the requisite skills to aid in the counter-offensive and fight against the hoard. Enlist with the soldier Dealos to learn how you can be of service to your country. |
Defeated the Medusa Creant
At the center of a twisted and dangerous maze lurks a ferocious creature known as Medusa - one of the four Creants that threaten life as we know it in Temuair. By assembling her talisman, you may call her forth and challenge her for great rewards. Depending on your path, you may receive a powerful piece of equipment devised by one of the greatest armorsmiths in all of history, the great Miraedus. At the very least, all will know you bested this demon with a Selo declaring your accomplishment. |
Defeated the Lady Pheonix Creant
Deep in the reaches of the Shinewood Forest is a peculiar temple. Bringing the pieces of her corporeal form to this swirling abyss will allow you to summon another of the four dread creants – Lady Pheonix. Be sure to take care, as this temple is situated in a deadly location, so she is often not the only danger aspiring Grand Masters will face. |
Defeated the Tauren Creant
Atop the icy peaks of Mt. Giragen, suspended in an icy prison, is the savage Tauren Creant. He can be freed from this cocoon if you’re able to procure his horn and nose ring; though this will involve facing other dreadful foes. When you’re ready to engage with this monster, bundle up and head to the northern peaks to seek this Creant out. |
Defeated the Shamensyth Creant
In the vexing, twisted sewers beneath the city of Oren, there lurks a terrible shadow that once set the Shinewood ablaze. If you can reconstruct its arcane staff, you may be able to call forth the deadly Shamensyth. Doing so will require patience and a strong sense of direction; consider bringing a rogue along to help navigate these teeming halls. |
As mentioned earlier, there are many ways to add a plethora of Selos to your Aisling Legend that don’t involve traipsing about Temuair slaying beasts and seeking quests. A majority of the deeds that can be noted in your Legend come from engaging with the community at large, or by performing tasks related to your craft. This includes things like being involved in town politics, worship in one of the eight temples, getting involved with the Mileth College or even by testing yourself against other Aislings in the Arena. The social landscape of Temuair is a paradise for Aislingkind, and it can be as deep or as shallow as you wish. This section will outline a number of the common marks associated with Aisling society and other social engagements.
While these marks can typically be gotten at any point during your life as an Aisling, if you are thinking of walking a second path rather than becoming a pure master, you may want to consider seeking some of these Selos before you make that switch, as you will not be able to indulge in the pastimes of your previous life. This is especially pronounced for those leaving the path of the Priest, as those individuals have access to roles and actions within the church that others do not.
That said, while I have done extensive research on hundreds of Aisling Legends, there are aspects of Government and Faith that are unlikely to occur in today’s society. As a living document, I will make revisions to the appendix when I find other antiquated Selos, but let this serve as a general guide to the most common tasks you can involve yourself in.
Life exists outside of the crypts, forests and dungeons of Temuair. Let life reward you through the living, and don’t miss out on these significant Selos that the Mundanes award simply for having a rich and full social life.
Mentored ((Name)) | |
Taking a student under your wing is a big responsibility, but by virtue of your Aisling Spark, you have something to offer the next generation; whether that is battle tactics, the secrets of being an excellent tailor, the art of making a deal or how to be an upstanding member of your temple. Your student doesn’t need to be of the same path as you, but they should align with your skills in some way. Being a good mentor is a relationship that can last years; sometimes even a lifetime. As such, the Mundanes will update this Selo each time you sit down with your student to go over lessons, once a double-moon. |
Loves ((Name))Married ((Name))
Finding a soulmate is a greater gift than any enchanted belt or treasure hoard, and spending time with that special someone is more thrilling than the hardest-fought battle. As such, the Mundanes seek to adorn your Legend with these Selos, in the same way that love decorates the halls of our hearts. To have your love declared with a Selo, you must perform the fae ritual of bonding in the Enchanted Garden Glade; marriage takes place in the tradition of civilization in the church of Our Lady of Light. Doing one does not preclude the other. |
Broke up with ((Name))Divorced ((Name))
On the other hand, sometimes love ultimately leads to heartache. When those bonds you formed with love have dissolved, we often need to seek official means to accept this emotional damage. As such, both the glading and the marriage can be dissolved. If your former lover is not in the lands at the time you have a priest carry out this procedure, you will be asked the name of the one you used to love – any name will do, and will be recorded on your Legend as such. |
Formerly Known as ((Name))
If one is unhappy with their chosen name, they may petition the Mundanes with a sizable bribe of Kruna – a rare and foreign currency – to change their names. In an attempt at transparency, lest these Aislings be attempting to outrun the law, debts or to defraud other Aislings, their previous identity will be marked on their Legend. |
Theater Director | |
Tangentially associated with the Suomi Troupe, the Theater Director is an Aisling that is trusted by the Mundane staff of the Garamonde Theater to organize performances in the facility. If you’re interested in obtaining this Selo, seek a Suomi Burgess and make your case. |
Legendary Aisling | |
One of the very few Selos penned in the coveted Golden Ink, becoming a Legendary Aisling doesn’t require you to do more than age gracefully. In the eyes of the Mundanes who conceived this honor, age is the defining factor that makes one exceptional. However, even though the barrier to entry for this mark is weighed in an unremarkable way, it would seem that you typically don’t live long enough to attain this Selo without doing something noteworthy. |
Town politics are, in theory, a beautiful practice of rule shared between the Aisling and Mundane. Working together, the governments of Mileth, Rucesion, Suomi and Hwarone have independent and unique laws that were largely written and enforced by elected Aisling officials. While it might feel daunting to involve yourself in systems that have been in operation for hundreds of years, any Aisling is encouraged to at least become a Respected Citizen in the town they reside. For those who look to become more deeply entrenched in politics, here are a number of common marks you may see.
((Town)) Citizen by oath of ((Name))((Town)) Guest by oath of ((Name))
While all Aisling are, by default, made citizens of Mileth when they spark, you will not have this identifying mark unless you renounce your citizenship and either seek re-admittence or move to another town. For this, you’ll need to find a town official that can admit you. Typically this is a painless process that involves a quick scan of your Aisling Legend to check for criminal marks, but since you’ve worked so diligently on building a reputable legacy, that shouldn’t be an issue. If you have concerns, find an official before renouncing citizenship to ensure you’ll be able to take up residency without issue. |
Attempting to become ((Political Position))
This mark is a rare example of a red mark that doesn’t indicate an undesirable action. Rather, it simply states that you are in the process of campaigning for political office. Why the Mundanes decided to pen this in the dreaded Crimson Ink is a mystery - I’ve heard some speculate that it was done so to make it stand out among the common ink mark, while others insist it is to motivate these Aislings not to delay in their campaign. Once you take office, this mark will be removed from your Legend, so don’t let it deter you from being involved. |
Politically Sponsored by ((Name))
Every political office requires sponsorship from an existing politician within that town. While most politicians are happy to do this for you, it can sometimes be a challenge to find someone within the same range to vouch for you. If this happens, you may want to call upon a Knight of Temuair who is able to provide sponsorship to any aspirant regardless of their kingdom. Once this sponsorship has been accepted by the Mundanes, it will be removed from your Legend. |
- Political Clout ((#)))
This mark is visible only to the bearer of the Legend, and serves as a tracker for how much support you have in your political circle. Every time you receive a vote, your clout will go up. Keeping a keen eye on this number will assist in knowing when you have enough support to take office. As this mark is only visible to you, it doesn’t serve to boost your Legend, but it is an integral part of any politician's Legend. |
Respected Citizen by ((#))
The very first office any Aisling will hold is always that of the Respected Citizen. This position is only vaguely political, though you are given the ability to admit citizens or guests to your Kingdom, assuming you have at least one clout. This position is like a primer for future roles, so be sure to put your best foot forward and be a great ambassador for your city. |
Admitted Citizen ((Name)) ((#))
The most common action across all of the political spectrum is the admittance of new citizens. This can be performed by anyone from Respected Citizen to Judge, so, assuming you can find someone without a home who wishes to reside in your city of choice, this is an easy Selo to add to your collection. |
Guard ((#))Guard Captain ((#)) Judge ((#)) | Demagogue by ((Name))
Town governments are split into two main branches: the legislative branch that creates law and the judicial branch that enforces law. While the Judicial branch has three roles; each feeding into the next from Guard to Guard Captain to Judge; whereas the Legislative branch has only two positions, but you are expected to serve a longer stint as a respected citizen. Choosing which branch to enter is entirely up to the prerogative of the Aisling and their interests, though serving in one does not preclude you from entering the other. There are many who have terms as both Burgess and Judge on their legend. How involved you get is up to you, and one must weigh the burden of responsibility against the accumulation of Selos on your Legend. |
Exiled ((Name))Pardoned Exiled of ((Name))
One of the responsibilities of the Town governments is the enforcement of punishments as laid out in the town charter. One of these punishments is exile, in which the criminal is stripped of their citizenship and barred from returning to the town in question for a predetermined length of time. If you are the one who has to perform this action, you will receive a Selo marking your actions; either in performing the exile, or forgiving it (or, better yet, both). |
Summoned to Court by ((Name))Sentenced ((#)) Criminals Sgath Summoning on ((Name))
In the course of your political career, you may find that you accumulate a number of dreaded crimson marks in the line of duty. Unfortunately, while these Selos speak of the crimes of others, the striking red ink often reflects poorly on the official carrying out the sentence. If you’re aiming to keep your Legend free of such marks, you may not wish to enter higher office, as you can never be certain you won’t be called upon to bring justice to someone that is causing chaos in your home. |
Removed from office by ((Name))
While I hope you never have to bear this shameful mark, and though it very infrequently happens these days, you should be aware that behaving in a corrupt way or abusing your power while in office may result in being forcibly removed, and, therefore, having your legend marked with this Selo, written in the more dreaded ink - orange. |
Suomi Culture AdvocateMember of the Suomi Troupe Honorary Member of the Suomi Troupe Burgess of the Suomi Troupe
In the distant kingdom of Suomi, politics are handled by the preeminent performing troupe of the land, which is based out of this quiet rural location. The Suomi Troupe is less concerned with writing and enforcing laws and more interested in writing and performing plays, or coming up with celebrations to bring the Aisling population of Temuair together. There are a number of levels of engagement one may have within the Troupe, ranging from the Culture Advocate to the Burgess. If you wish to have a more artistic take on community management, you may be perfect for the Suomi Troupe. Of note is you may carry the Culture Advocate selo while still living in other Temuair kingdoms, so those looking to add to their Legend may wish to speak to a Burgess about attending their meetings. |
Knight of TemuairRanger Master Ranger
These officials are the bridge between the world of the Mundane lawkeepers and the Aisling population. One does not run for these offices in the same sense as those involved in Town Politics do, rather, there has to be an overwhelming consensus among those already within these organizations that there A) is a need for another within these ranks and B) that you are the right person for that job. Knights can be nominated by other knights, upon which they will enter a review period where both the existing knighthood and the general population has a chance to speak for or against that person. Rangers, on the other hand, are chosen and appointed directly by others in the organization; typically at the discretion of the Master Ranger Ishikawa. While the office of the Knights of Loures and the Rangers are two different institutions, most rangers are appointed from within the Knighthood, so it is common for them to hold both titles. If you wish to add one of these rare titles to your Legend, I can only wish you the best of luck. Create positive change, stay active in politics and show the light of the Goddess in all that you do. Perhaps your luminance will catch the eye of those in power. |
Of all the social traditions that Aislings practice, being involved in the worship to the Gods of the Octave is the most rewarding. Not only is your devotion rewarded with divine favor, but you also have a great opportunity to teach, to help the needy and to form a cohesive, inspired community. All Aislings are welcome to join and worship their preferred God, but those who walk the path of the priest are trusted with deeper roles in leadership of the temples. Those who begin their Aisling journey as priests but decide to walk another path before mastery should consider achieving such a role before their new life, as once you leave the path of the priest, you will no longer be welcome among the clergy.
- ((Deity)) Worshipper by ((Name))
Your first role in any temple will be that of Worshipper. To officially worship your favorite God, you must seek an Aisling that carries the ROLE of priest – not simply one who walks the path of priest – of that chosen religion. When you join a temple, you will be given the tools to perform worship, as well as a mark that declares your faith. However, this mark is only visible to you, as your contract with your deity is one held between you and your God. |
- ((Deity)) Acolyte by ((Name))
Once you have involved yourself in matters of the temple and have demonstrated your faith to the Gods, you may be asked to take a greater role in the church. Acolyte means different things in different temples, so be sure to ask the clergy what responsibilities come with this new title. This Selo will replace your worshipper mark, but will now be visible to all Aislings that consult your legend. For those outside the path of the priest, this is also the highest achievable rank. |
Completed Religious Geas for ((Name))
At times your advancement to Acolyte will come with a test of faith, yet at other times your priest may offer you a great task to further the influence of your God. This is called a geas; a sort of quest given by the clergy of your faith. These come in two flavors, lesser and greater. Both will greatly increase your faith, but if you perform a greater geas you will have your Legend marked with a Selo declaring your accomplishment. Those of any path may perform a geas at the request of their clergy. |
- ((Deity)) Priest by ((Name))
Reserved only for those who walk the path of the Priest, this is the first rank among the clergy in the religious temples. Priests can perform a great number of tasks in the temple; consecrations, desecrations, initiating new worshipers and – above all – holding mass to their God. Every religion has their own doctrine and every priest has their own style - this can range from long sermons, open discussions, a moment of silent consideration or interactive games. As a priest, you are encouraged to find your own voice. Typically, you take your vow as a priest alone, unless you are being appointed directly by the higher clergy - as such, most Selos will read “Priest by self”, which shows your bond with your God is strong and your faith is divine. |
Initiated Worshipper ((Name))
This Selo tracks the number of people you, as a priest, have brought into your faith and tells the name of the last person you welcomed to the temple. This mark carries a certain status among those in the clergy, primarily because you need to have a considerable number of initiates to advance among the high clergy. Even if you are leaving the path of the priest, you should try to bring at least a few new worshippers into the fold to memorialize your role and devotion. Once you leave the path of the priest, this task will not be available to you. |
Last Held Mass ((Date))
Once you have held your first mass, you will receive this Selo, which is updated upon each consecutive mass – tracking both the date and the number of times you have performed this holy ritual. As with the previous marks, be mindful to hold at least one holy mass before leaving the path of the priest, should you be looking to leave the life of priesthood in favor of another. |
Has forsaken ((Deity))
It happens – sometimes we lose faith in our God, in the clergy of a temple or are simply drawn to a new worship by the charisma of a different Deity. When you leave your temple, the Mundanes will take note of this in your Legend. It is penned in common ink and is generally not seen as a mark of shame; it shows you left of your own accord and, hopefully, with grace. |
((Deity)) Cleric by ((Name)) ((Deity)) Minister by ((Name)) ((Deity)) High Priest by ((Name))
The roles of the higher clergy are reserved, not just for those who walk the path of priesthood, but also those who have demonstrated great creative gifts by Aisling and Mundane alike. To enter the high clergy as a cleric, you must have one a minor award of Clave; for minister and high priest you will need at least Village recognition. For other restrictions, you should consult with the temple attendant. Most who choose to walk a second path rarely remain a priest long enough to achieve these sacred roles before they start a new life, but it should go without saying, if you wish to take this Selo into your new role, do so before you start down that path. |
One hallmark of the Aisling Spark is a divine creativity. It is in our very nature, through Deoch’s great gift, that we have the desire to create; to share wisdom. As such, the Mileth College was founded to facilitate that pursuit. Here, Aislings gather to teach, to learn and to share their gifts with the world. Attendance to any class is free, and those who have been recognized are welcome to step into any unused classroom and perform a lecture. Through this teaching, we then attain the accumulated knowledge to write a piece ourselves and, should it be deemed worthy, be set alongside other masterpieces in the Royal Library of Loures.
Attended a Class at Mileth College
This Selo marks your journey through higher education by tracking the number of classes you have attended. This is easily accomplished, as all you have to do to attain this is show up and stay awake long enough to accept the lesson. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements on upcoming classes and make the time to attend. Selo or not, it is an enriching experience to attend these learning opportunities. |
Educated - ((#)) | |
Quite randomly, it seems, the Mundanes will decree that, through attendance of a class, you have attained a certain measure of education. These marks are frustrating to attain because the Mundanes seem to award them without any sense of normalcy, but they are also deeply important to gather. Only when you have five educated marks can you submit a work for judgement to the other nobles. The best way to earn these marks is simply to keep attending classes! |
Taught a Class at Mileth College
On the other side of the spectrum, we find that those who teach are also rewarded with a Selo that tracks the number of classes they have offered. Prestigious teachers can see this number rise quite high. It is the duty of those with recognition to teach others and inspire them to greatness, as they were inspired by the teachers before them. |
Lord of the ArtsLady of the Arts
These precious marks are reserved for those with the deepest respect of the Mundanes and nobles of Mileth College. Once you have accumulated the appropriate respect as a contest winner, teacher and noble, you may petition for this wonderful cerulean Selo and title. It is an aspirational honor we should all hope to attain. |
Despite what stubborn old purists of Deochs past might say, Arena is a thriving part of the modern social structure. Within the halls of this structure, some of the most storied battles in the history of Aislingkind have been fought. Among the combatants here, you’ll find a unique breed of adversarial respect that is unique among the community. This subculture within Temuair is maybe the most active and thriving of all that we’ve covered, and we should celebrate the dedication of those that test themselves against the power of their brethren in combat for doing a great deal for keeping the spark alive in Temuair. It is no surprise that a wide breadth of Event Selos relate to the Arena in this age. For those looking to get involved, here is a short-list of marks you can achieve while involving yourself in this community.
Arena Battles: ((#)) | |
As soon as you participate in your first arena battle, you will begin to accumulate this Selo, which increases with each consecutive match. Some of the most esteemed participants have numbers well into the thousands, but if you’re simply looking to mark your legend, a single battle will suffice. However… |
Arena Victories: ((#))
… Tracking your battles only tells half the story. While there is no Selo for Arena Losses, one only has to do the simple math between your battles fought and the number attached to this Selo, which tracks your victories, to work out your ratio. If you’re looking for both the Battles and the Victory Selos, the only way to achieve this is to be on the winning team when the dust settles. This may take a number of attempts, but through your numerous battles, eventually you will hone your skill enough to be a fearsome competitor. |
Team Arena Wins ((#)) | |
This cerulean Selo marks a victory related to a special hosted match. To find out when and how you may compete in such a tournament, I’d seek the advice of a member of the Arena Host team. |
Arena HostArena Host Captain Master Arena Host
Like the other social communities of Temuair, the Arena also has its own hierarchy, which includes both Hosts and Host Captains. These officials regulate the Arena, ensuring that matches are balanced, fair and above all - fun. People who hold this position are chosen by existing members of the Arena Team and are active participants held in high regard. |
In addition to the Selos one may accumulate as they progress along their path, there are also tasks and marks that are exclusive to the five paths of Temuair. While these activities are always available to those of the listed professions regardless of their circle, you should pay special attention to these marks if you intend to walk another path. Be sure to remain vigilant and consult this list before you take that first step into your new life.
Blade Smith ((#))-Involved in Bladesmithing
While a Warrior’s place is on the battlefield, no one truly knows the intricacies of a beautifully balanced sword like the one who makes a career of swinging one. As such, many warriors take a turn at the forge in attempts to make a perfect blade. Spending some time at the weaponsmith honing this craft will earn you these Selos, but bear in mind that only the bearer will see how involved you are in the craft; others will only see at what level your skill as a bladesmith lies. |
Tailor ((#)) | |
Working alongside local craftsmen to improve your talents as a tailor will reward you - not just in your ability to craft masterful garments, but in a Selo that tracks how proficient you are with your skills. Spending some time to earn this honor is a worthy use of your labor. |
Won ((#)) Pit Fights | |
Off the coast of Abel lies a special arena reserved only for warriors. Here they may engage in single combat with another willing participant in a life-or-death duel. Winning such a battle will reward you with the honor of victory and this Selo, which will also track consecutive victories. |
Dreamed of Carnun’s Trial
In times long past, there was a fabled hunter who stalked the lands. Known by his brilliant hy-brasyl axe and his cobalt-blue armor adorned with sinister spikes, Carnun was an archetypal warrior, and many who have achieved at least 80 insights will dream of his trials. Doing so will award the dreamer with their own set of imposing armor and this Selo, which ties your Legend to his. |
Reforged Eclipse | |
Life as a master warrior is a time of overwhelming power; not only are you given a deadly sword at the end of your path, but also wrestle a great weapon from the Tauren Creant. However, if you take the mantle of the Gladiator, you must surrender these arms, leaving your arsenal feeling rather underpowered. As such, some seek to reforge the sword of Tenes, said to have a power so dreadful it blacked out the sun. Doing so is quite a feat, and will be immortalized on your legend with this Selo. |
((Color)) Dugon by ((Name))
The life of a Monk is one of discipline and study. This regiment is parsed out and measured by the brothers of the Sapphire Stream, who ensure that those who learn these powerful techniques are responsible enough to know their secrets. This is broken into levels, or, Dugons, represented by colored belts worn around the head. There are eight different colors, ranging from White to Black. This Selo will declare to others the current level of study you have obtained. |
Sabonim of ((#)) Dugon | |
The Sapphire Stream relies, not on the Mundanes to teach these Dugons, but rather on Aisling teachers to guide the younger monks. Teaching others is so intrinsic to the progression through the ranks of Sapphire Stream that you can’t progress without having a number of students under your tutelage. These teachers are called Sabonim, and accepting a student will give you this rewarding Selo, which will accurately track the number of students you’ve mentored. |
Kelberoth FormWhite Bat Form | Draco Form Scorpion Form
There are a number of martial arts stances that monks may adopt; each inspired by a beast. A monk may choose one of these stances to study. Along with the powerful skills and spells that come with this study, you will also have your Legend marked with a Selo that denotes which of these forms you have adopted. |
Tailor ((#)) | |
Like warriors, Monks may also use their allotted time daily to work for the tailor. Doing so yields many rewards, like improved garments or even exotic dyes kept by village craftsmen. Be sure to learn enough to earn this Selo on your Legend; especially if you plan to walk a path like Priest or Wizard. |
Herbalist ((#)) | |
Part of a Monk’s duties are the gathering of herbs to create medicinal tonics. Those who are studied in this healing will be able to mix a plethora of beneficial potions in the great enchanted garden; your proficiency is noted by this Selo. |
Pattern Walker of ((Night / Earth / Sea))
In the tradition of the ancient Aosdic oppressor/protector; a Monk of 80 insights or more may attempt to trace the path of the fabled Pattern Walker and in doing so don its garments. There are three possible realms in which to tread: Night, Earth and Sea - which you are tasked with will inform the Selo used to mark your Legend. |
Recovered the Obsidian
Through a series of tests and tasks, a Monk may embark on their quest to recover one of the fabled Dark Artifacts: the dreadful Obsidian. Not only will you add this powerful weapon to your inventory, but this Selo will let everyone who views your Legend know that you have accomplished this feat. |
Tailor ((#)) | |
Much like Warriors and Monks, Rogues are trusted by Mundane tailors to assist them in their duties, therefore, honing their abilities. It may take a number of tries before your achieve any measure of success, but remain vigilate and you will eventually attain the Selo of the tailor. |
Blade Smith ((#))-Involved in Bladesmithing
Rogues are able to craft a diverse range of one-handed blades. Doing so can award the artisan with two different Selos - one which marks your involvement that is only visible to the bearer, and one that measures your ability with the craft. It is advised to keep working at the craft until you attain your first level of Bladesmithing, at the very least. |
Gem Smith ((#))-Involved in Gem Polishing
While Rogues certainly have a diverse range of tasks they can perform, expect that most of their free time will be spent hunched over by the Canals of Rucesion, fastidiously polishing precious stones for eager young priests, or shaping Talgonite into shimmering black Talos. Gem Smithing is always in demand and requires a vast amount of time to perfect. Luckily the Mundanes sought fit to honor this pursuit with two Selos; like bladesmithing, your involvement in polishing is only visible to the bearer, but everyone will see that even the youngest Rogues have mastered this craft in short order. |
Marauder of ((Gold / Hy-Brasyl))
The Mukul tell of a method to recall dreams of power from times when their kind still occupied the icy lands of Kadath. If you are brave enough to enact the ritual, you, too, may seek this power and wear the outfit of the Marauder. In addition, you will also receive a Selo marking this accomplishment. |
Recovered the Arcane Gauntlet
Involving yourself in a series of intrigue, violence and crime will lead the intrepid master Rogue to the fabled Arcane Gauntlet. Upon obtaining this Dark Artifact, you will also receive a Selo from the Mundanes declaring your possession of this rare equipment. |
Wizardry Research | |
The most iconic task a Wizard can devote themselves to while they walk this path is Wizardry Research. One may use Dar’s laboratory to conduct a great number of different tasks. Whether you choose to study alchemy, sorcery, enchantment or the properties of an item, you will increase your competency in research. This level will be noted with a Selo declaring your ability. |
Elementalist | |
When you tell someone you are spending the time of your precious work day harvestion fiors, you may see a few raised eyebrows. Today, our world is flush with these elemental potions, and mana is rarely cultivated through these means, so there is little demand for elementalism. Still, the mark is codified and the Mundanes are happy to amend this Selo to your Legend to mark this accomplishment. |
Herbalist ((#)) | |
Those steeped in arcane lore also have profound knowledge of botanical properties and, therefore, make excellent herbalists. As a Wizard you may use your abilities to mix potions from the plants of the Enchanted Garden, and in doing so earn this Selo. |
Walks the Path of Necromancy
The art of reanimating the dead is a dark magic that is generally frowned upon by society. Those with a curious and open mind may seek out the master Necromancer Gigean to join the ranks of those that dabble with the undead. Be forewarned, though, that the Mundanes will stamp your Legend with this red Selo, and your involvement in Necromancy may preclude you from a number of temples. |
Dreamed of ((Madb / Ana / Macha))
The veil that separates the healing magic of the Priest and the tremendous power of the Wizard is never weaker than it is when it comes to the realm of dreams. A curious thing happens for female magic users once they have attained their 80th insight - they find they will dream of the ancient Triple-Goddess: Madb, Ana and Macha. Doing so will grant the dreamer a gossamer gown, evocative of the fashion of the Goddesses of old and new. You will gain a Selo that marks the Goddess that appeared in your visions. |
Cthonic Disciple of ((Dawn / Death / Decay ))
Men steeped in magical attunement, on the other hand, will dream of darker things - and in doing so become a disciple to that darkness. Dawn, Death and Decay represent Sgrios’ half of the wheel of life, and in becoming a servant of His will, you will gain the vestments of the Wraith and a Selo that tells of your allegiance. |
Discovered the Dark Ring
This cursed ring, one of the fabled Dark Artifacts, may be sought by a Master Wizard. In doing so, you not only unlock its corporeal form, but the forbidden magic it contains. If you prove successful in this quest, your deeds will be noted by this Selo. |
Herbalist ((#)) | |
A priest's role is to provide healing and ease suffering, so it is no wonder that they should dedicate themselves to learning the art of crafting healing potions and salves with the plants in the Enchanted Garden. The Mundanes will mark your aptitude with this art using this Selo. |
Mileth Altar Worshipper
While it is not uncommon to see a line of Aislings queuing up to offer silken hair at the altar as part of the rite of ascension, for a priest this altar holds deeper gifts. When you are devoted to the Gods and frequently bring them valuable offerings, you may be blessed with this cerulean Selo that records your devotion for all to see. |
Joined ((Name)) to a lover
One of the greatest pleasures on the path of the Priest is being asked to officiate the union of two lovers. Whether they opt for the old ways of being ‘gladed’ amongst the fae of the garden, or in the Church of the Light in the modern tradition, an honored priest is able to facilitate this display of love. As such, the Mundanes will note your contribution to this ritual with a Selo on your Legend. |
Broke up ((Name))’s LovePerformed Divorce of ((Name))
Regardless of what you may have heard, love is not always eternal. There often comes a time when two people wish to dissolve their partnership. Unfortunately performing that wretched task also falls on the shoulders of the Priest. Ending a gladed love will result in a Selo that announces you broke up a love; performing a divorce in the church will render a mark that reflects this. Both marks are crimson, so if you wish to keep a clean Legend, think carefully before agreeing to perform this ritual. |
Dreamed of ((Madb / Ana / Macha))
As covered in the previous section on Selos of the Wizard, this dream of the ancient Triple-Goddess haunts the sleep of female practitioners of the magic arts. The only difference is the Selo bears the mark of the Priest rather than the staff of the Wizard. |
Cthonic Disciple of ((Dawn / Death / Decay ))
Again, this Selo is covered in the previous section about Wizard selos. It involves troubling dreams about Sgrios’ domain; dreams that plague male magic users. The difference here is that it bears the mark of the priest rather than the Selo associated with wizards. |
Discovered the Cluais Jewel
The dark power of the earrings once worn by the bride of darkness can belong to the Master Priest if they so seek out the power of the Dark Artifact. Successfully procuring these precious gems will provide you with a Selo memorializing this achievement. |
There are a number of events that happen with predictable regularity throughout the cycle, and many of these events provide desirable marks to expand your Aisling Legend. While the Mundanes make efforts to expand our world with new events, these have more or less been consistent for the last ten cycles or more; some since the earliest days of the Aisling Age. Unfortunately, if you miss one the only thing to do is be patient and wait for it to resurface again in eight Deochs. Because there are so many event Selos to collect, we will only be covering a few of the more prestigious Selos here, but check the Appendix for a more detailed list of event related Selos.
Eulogy to (( Adranuch at Pravat / Matrika at Mehadi / Arpina at Astrid ))
Three distinct cultures all simultaneously hold solemn grievances of their fallen Goddesses. The Grimlock of Pravat, the Mukul of Mehadi and the Kobold of Astrid all weep for the death of their beloved protector; as do we Aisling weep for the loss of Danaan. Should you feel moved to do so, you can join in this eulogy at any of the locations listed, and this act of compassion will be marked in your Legend. |
((Adranuch’s / Matrika’s / Arpina’s)) Redemption at ((Pravat / Mehadi / Astrid))
At another auspicious time in the cycle, those mournful species gather in reverence of the gift given by their matriarch, and give praise to Her. Should you bring the gift of the Eulogy, you will find it has taken on a new character, and your Legend will be marked with a Selo commemorating this passionate ritual. |
Adoration of Danaan | |
Gather with companions who gave their eulogy at the other two locations to give your enduring praise to Danaan, the Goddess of Light who selflessly gave her immortal life to save us from eternal darkness. This cerulean Selo comes with a great gift for your relentless devotion to Her. |
Completed Quarterly Insect Event
Four times per cycle the Mundanes organize an agonizing insect hunt in which Aislings are tasked with collecting a vast and diverse collection of bugs from across the continents. There are plentiful prizes available for those brave enough to participate, including this cerulean Selo that tracks the number of times you have completed this event. |
Received a Pet from the Gods
The rare mark of victory and a new companion can be yours if you can lure an escaped horse back to the temple it belongs to. While you may not care too much about the reward, it is certainly worth the hassle to add another Victorious Selo to your Legend. |
Crafted Yule Logs for the Inns
In the mountainous Northwest Temuair, winter is no small matter. It is not uncommon for severe weather to claim more lives than a prowling Kelberoth over the course of the cold season. For that reason, it is an exceptional act of kindness to bring the festive gift of fire to the inns. Because of this, the Mundanes have decreed this Selo be penned in Cerulean ink. |
Recovered Candy Treats
In a festive display of compassion for the Mundanes, you may agree to take a young child out to collect some candy while her mother works a demanding shift. Doing so will reward you with one of the rare Silver Selos, in addition to some more tangible rewards. |
Event - Got Lumen Amulet from Leprechaun
Trickster elves known as Leprechauns are famed for their treasures, and when they emerge once a cycle, everyone is on the hunt for them. Should you manage to corral one of the wiley spirits, you will be duly rewarded with one of the famed Lumen Amulets and this Selo declaring your accomplishment. |
Banished Snakes from Lynith Beach Way
Gather together with some stout and capable fellows to drive the snakes from Lynith Beach. Once per cycle these migratory snakes return to the shore and wreak havoc - if you can prove successful in this endeavor, you’ll find your Legend marked with this silver Selo. |
Freed cursed mundanes in Abel
A punishing realm of darkness has taken hold of these unfortunate Mundanes, and the situation calls for great force and the combined power of the Aisling to resolve. If you can vanquish the great evil inside this rift, you may bring peace to the Mundane population, and earn yourself a Cerulean Selo to celebrate your victory. |
Not every mark one can have affixed to their Legend is positive or welcome. As the Aisling Legend exists to track your notoriety and deeds, they also serve to record wrongdoings, mistakes and grievances. While we should be seen as a sum of our accomplishments - and even some of the highest officers in the land bear a few dark marks on their records - it often seems as if a single orange Selo mars the entire Legend. In the past it was enough to drive an Aisling into self exile; leaving the lands for pastures where their shame couldn’t follow.
These days there is a more enlightened view, and some even wear their jailings with pride – I know more than a few who would boast a Sgath Summoning (and many more, still, who would love to be in attendance for one). Regardless, even marks that are seen as undesirable tell a story, and oftentimes by reading the whole of the Legend you can get a clearer picture of the life of the accused. Getting one of these marks is not the end of the world, nor your life. It is simply a single chapter in the book of your life.
Aside from Selos that speak of criminal activity, there are other Selos you may wish to avoid, either just because the Crimson Selos are an upsetting contrast to the whites, blues, silvers and golds, or because the myriad of meaningless marks do nothing to tell of your triumphs and serve only to water down or distract from what you truly wish to showcase. Still, each Legend belongs only to the bearer, and it is for us to decide what constitutes a successful curation of this and what we deem to be ugly. This section only seeks to highlight a number of marks that you may wish to avoid and does not serve as a commentary on those that bear such marks.
It can happen to anyone, whether intentionally or by accident. Laws are often trivial, petty or meaningless and go unenforced until the moment they aren’t and someone is made an example of. Sometimes, as Aislings, we have no choice but to live in a manner counter to the ideal society set up centuries ago. While the author is not condoning wanton disregard for the law, I only wish to highlight that bad breaks can happen to good people. A criminal mark should not be confused with a personality.
If you wish to avoid bearing such marks, here are a few common ones that often accompany the Legends of scofflaw and lawmakers alike.
Arrested by ((Name)) ((Auto Hunting))
A rather antiquated Selo that has largely been replaced by a more general-purpose mark; this is used by the Rangers for those found hunting while in a fugue state. Though I don’t believe this is used frequently, if at all, you will still find it occupying space on many Legends that span back to the age where the Rangers were more involved in Aisling life. |
Jailed ((#)) times - last by ((Name))
The more modern version of the ((Auto Hunting)) mark cuts to the quick and simple states that the Aisling was jailed, how many times they were jailed and by who. Those seeking further details of the arrest can find them posted on the board in the Ranger’s office. While there have been some relaxed views on the Mundane mandates in recent times, it is still within the Ranger’s discretion whether they will enforce them or not. Breaking any Mundane law still puts you at risk of a jailing, so tread lightly, lest your Legend be branded with this Selo. |
Murdered ((#)) Tagor Citizens
While you will not serve time for the slaughter of the unfortunate Mundane citizens of Tagor, doing so marks you as a murderer - a reputation that follows through all facets of society. There are some twisted Aislings that delight in this, and proudly boast of their kill count. Such people would even make Lord Sgrios blush. Whether you wind up with this mark is entirely up to you; simply be mindful of yourself when facing the trial of Tagor Citizenship. |
I’ll admit that there are some who operate under the assumption that quantity is greater than quality. These maximalists would seek to stuff every insignificant detail into their Legend, to the point where great accomplishments are awash in a sea of trivial nonsense. These Aislings rarely have much of value to display in the first place, which is why they often turn to this fluff to pad their Legend. Still, others are, unfortunately, unavoidable and come from the modern Mundane failing to understand the subtle nuances of life in Temuair. I suppose it is our own fault for expecting enlightenment from the Mundane in the first place.
‘Legend Spam’ comes from a number of places, with a few common marks accounting for most of it. While you may wish to engage in these areas of Temuairian life - some of them are rather significant - this flood of petty marks can be mitigated partially by an organized attempt to group them together on your legend. In this way, those grand feats are never lost amidst the chaff of nonsense.
To help you plan accordingly, here are a number of problematic marks you should look out for.
Owner of pet ((Creature & Name))
When the Mundanes first taught the Aisling how to care for pets, it was a rare and prized thing. Aislings were rarely seen without a companion at their side, and it was common to see creatures of all types frolicing together. Since then, though, there have been hundreds of different beasts domesticated and, while some are quite rare, simply acquiring a pet doesn’t seem to be an accomplishment of note. Because there are so many different pets that are all easily obtained, you will often find Legends that are lousy with endless lists of creatures all mixed in with Selos of greater importance. When scanning Legends with multiple pet marks, I tend to quickly thumb through the pages to the end, without paying much attention to the content. It is a red flag for me, and I’m sure I’ve overlooked numerous rare marks because my mind has been numbed by trivial nonsense. While I would never begrudge someone the companionship of a pet, I would suggest that the Aisling limit their stable to only a few choice selections, or attempt to adopt their pets all at once, in one large block that has clear boundaries. Managing these marks in such a way will present a clean and aesthetically pleasing Legend. |
Completed ((Location)) Daily Quest
It is a shame to have to include these Selos in this section, as completing Daily Quests is a great way to obtain insight, materials and to stay sharp and busy. There is something to do for Aislings at any point in their career; whether you are gathering flowers for the Alchemist, or fighting your way deep into Chaos. The Daily Quests are a gift to Aislingkind and I don’t mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but… The problem is that every Mundane wishes to stamp your Legend with their own unique location, seemingly in an attempt to prove amongst themselves that fashion design and facing great mortal danger are on equal footing. There are a total of twenty different daily quests, which means you are flooding your Legend with twenty nearly–identical Selos. The compassionate thing for the Mundanes to do would have been to simply count all the Daily Quests cumulatively in a single Selo, but alas. Again, though more difficult, I urge you to try to cluster as many of these Daily Quests together as possible, so as to contain them to a specific block that can be visually consumed as a collective, rather than disparately scattered among greater Selos of your Legend. |
Selos of the Aman Jungle
| |
Adventures in the Aman Jungle can be deeply frustrating. Between trekking great distances through a hostile, muddy rainforest and having to wait long gaps between steps, it is demanding of both your attention, your time and your Legend. Though these Selos do tell a story of sorts, and though the accomplishments are not as minor as adopting a pet, I still find these marks highly distracting on a Legend. Especially when they are mixed about between other Selos, the narrative these marks attempt to spin is easily lost and muddied. While I would never advise against exploring this rich tapestry of adventure, I would recommend, to the best of your ability, to focus solely on completing the entire chain unbroken. By doing so, you preserve the integrity of this chain while also containing it to its own dedicated section. |
Selos of the Yowien Territory
| |
In a continuation of your Jungle expedition, the Selos of the Yowien Territory offer the same conundrum but in bulk; these eight Selos, when paired with the Aman Jungle chain, come in at a whopping 13 marks on your legend. Perhaps the Mundanes of the Jungle are just more openhearted and generous with their Selos, but this creates a lot of clutter on a legend you worked so hard to curate. As such, do your best to cluster all of these together in an unbroken block – if you can keep them in succession to the Aman Selos, all the better. |
Not all undesirable marks are as a result of something you’ve done wrong; sometimes the crimson ink is used as a social commentary from the Mundanes to denote a behavior that doesn’t align with their concept of Aisling purity. As such, there are a number of tasks that result in Crimson Selos and, depending on your taste or the narrative you’re trying to tell with your Legend, you may wish to avoid. Listed are a number of these behaviors and tasks you may wish to avoid.
Fragile Chrysalis ((Unregistered))
When your spark is in a weakened state, you will be unable to participate in many activities of life in Temuair. You may find that various quests, events and hunting grounds are off limits while your chrysalis is in this weakened state. This mark is temporary and will be removed once your spark is strengthened once more. |
Sgrios’s Scar | |
Death is an undeniable fact of Aisling life. Because of our adventurous spirit, we are consistently facing dangerous circumstances, and on occasion we fail to overcome and slip into Sgrios’ dark realm. Philosophers are wont to argue about the nature of this exchange, but through the power of the Dark Lord, our sparks are returned back to our body to live and fight again. All that remains of this lapse of mortality is a scar, representing the ordeal. This Selo, and the scar that it represents, can be erased by invoking the healing gifts of the daughter of the moon, the father of our Spark or the son of nature. |
Sentenced ((#)) Criminals
Most will not have to face the difficult decision between Legend purity and the call of duty, however, those tasked with upholding the law are gifted this unpleasant Crimson Selo for their trouble. If you’re trying to ensure that your Legend stays clean, you may wish to shy away from higher offices. |
I have one more mark to share in closing - and I almost hesitate to write this section as it demonstrates a prejudice on behalf of the author. After careful consideration, though, I have decided to list this Selo here - and I do so not in judgment of those that bear this mark, but in deep lamentation of what it represents for Temuairian society.
Found a Golden Starfish
Harvested from the beaches of a small archipelago known as Paradise off the southern tip of Western Temuair, these Golden Starfish not only grant those who consume them this Selo, but imbue them with enough lived experience to grant them over sixty insights with the snap of the finger. |
When Golden Starfish were discovered on the shore of Paradise Island, what appeared to be a blessing for Aislingkind turned out to be the rapid degradation of the established order of Aisling life. By simply possessing this abundant creature, we were able to absorb enough insight to carry us nearly into our fourth circle. Reflecting back on what we covered in the section on Building Your Legend, most of those foundational tasks are no longer viable when the whole of our kind are essentially beginning life with 60+ insights.
Because of this, we saw a dramatic decline in sparks who cared to assist the poor beggar with his night terrors, Nigel had no one to run errands for his amusement and Porte Forest became overgrown with angry vegetation and vengeful wolves. As time went on, more methods were discovered to further our instantaneous enlightenment: seasonal clovers that sprout across the whole of Temuair, chests from the depths of Andor, chests from the water dungeon, etc etc. No longer did young Aislings need to hone their crafts through countless hours crawling through the crypts and caves of the land, and within no time the banks of Medenia were flooded with careless Aislings who barely knew how to cast a spell or throw a punch. Legends were laid to waste and counted about 8 steps from “Aisling” to “Gladiator”. The one Selo no one missed was that dreadful Starfish.
These days, with Medenian chests as plentiful as they are, one doesn’t even need to bother with the Golden Starfish, and can graduate into their Medenian path unmarred by even this small mark. But the damage is done, and society is only just now recovering from that mindset of unrivaled power translating to a legendary persona. My deepest hope is that this work inspires a new generation of Aisling to take the slow road to success and, at the end, have a legend of value attached to their name. Find, once more, the joy in a Legend that spans pages and pages - not because you hoard animals, but because you took the time to seek these plentiful opportunities. Tailor a new set of clothes, find joy in earning insights the hard way. Temuair is a land of magic as much now as it was when Deoch gave the first Aisling their spark, one simply needs to look around to see.
As ever,
Miraedus
This list was consolidated by taking notes on the Legends of hundreds of different Aislings. From the typical crowd in Pravat, to hunting down elder Aislings in their hidden homes. As such, my knowledge is only as complete as my search was able to uncover. If you are an Aisling with a remarkable Legend that bears marks I didn’t catch on my survey, I welcome you to contact me through mail, whisper or other means. This is a living document and will be updated accordingly. ~ Miraedus
